About

Batten

Roofing battens are supplied in both Graded (BS 5534) and Ungraded (Type A) specifications and imported from our long-term business partners in Sweden and the Baltics.

Graded batten – BS 5534

A tile batten gives rigidity to a roofing structure and is load bearing.  If a sub-standard product is used then the roof may fail.  The NHBC* specify that battens should be in accordance with

BS 5534. BS 5534 is the code of practice for installing slates and tiles to new-build pitched roof and vertical cladding. Battens used for roofing must be factory graded to BS 5534 and individually stamped.  The stamp and accompanying delivery note must state the supplier (mill), origin, grade and size.

BS 5534 is kiln dried to ensure dimensional stability and pressure treated to Usage Class 2.  As part of the treatment process a dye is added which gives our BS 5534 a distinctive blue colour.

*The National House Builders Council standards define the technical requirements and performance standards for the design and construction of new homes.  The NHBC states its primary purpose as raising the construction standards of new homes in the United Kingdom and providing consumer protection for homebuyers.

Ungraded batten – Type A

Although Type A batten is categorised as ‘Ungraded’ there is still a high percentage of grading performed when producing this batten.  This batten shouldn’t be used as roofing batten and is not graded to BS 5534.

Some Type A batten is supplied as unseasoned and therefore the dimension will reduce over time as the material naturally dries.  Parker First Forest Products only supply kiln dried and regularised Type A batten to ensure dimensional stability.

All our Type A batten is pressure treated to Usage Class 2 and is green in appearance.
